Dave Looper Automotive Clip Art

I started out in 1947 at Compton Las Campanus Hospital and by the time I was 9 years old, I was spending a lot of time under my brother’s ’46 Merc, helping change on of the 36 transmissions or 23 rear ends. We moved to Maywood, California in ’55 and later on I found out I lived on the same block as Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. When he opened his shop about 4 blocks from school, I was there constantly to watch him work. It was great, even if he did tell me to go home a lot.

My buddy, Randy Ellis, got a ’32 five-window coupe about that time and I got to help with it some. His dad was a real flathead builder, and I got to see a lot and learn. I went through the ‘55-’57 Chevy period at Bell High School and got my first street rod project after graduation - a ’29 Model A coupe with a flathead. Unfortunately, Uncle Sam wanted me so I joined the Air Force and had to sell the coupe. When I came home two years later, I was stationed at Vandenberg AFB and was able to commute on weekends. I bought my buddy’s ’29 Model A sedan Delivery, which I finished in 2 years.
It seems I have been around cars, mostly street rods, all my life but there have been some sports cars and I did a little racing. In ’77 I didn't’t have any cars to work on or extra money to buy one and I got rather bored, so I drew a picture of a street rod and I have been drawing ever since.

I am mainly self-taught, and work in pen and ink because it is the medium I know best. I am doing some studying, trying to learn how to do some color work. It is great to draw cars and design them the way you think they should look before you put a lot of money into them.
